Jewelry Making : Gold Jewelry Chain-Making
The question is how to make gold chain, and in reality, in today’s day and time very, very few people hand make gold chains anymore. Because of the sophistication of the technology and the machinery almost all chain that you find today was made by a machine, and when you look at all of the different styles of chain that you can buy today that it would be very difficult for an craftsman to hand make every one of these links anymore. Yes, there are some gold chains that are handmade, but the cost to hand make a chain versus the cost to buy a chain; there’s such a difference in it that most people will opt for buying a chain that was made.
And most chain that you buy any more in America when they come to a jewelry store it’s what they call carded, and we buy our chains on these cards that have the length, and the carat, and the quality of the chain. And then, we take em’ out of the packages and put em’ on our displays. At the end of the 1800’s, early 1900’s, during the industrial revolution when mechanical technology became prevalent that’s about the same time that hand making chains switched over to a mechanical function; somewhere around in the late 1800’s, early 1900’s, and then all up through the 1920’s and 1930’s is when it really became commonplace to buy machine made chains, as opposed to handmade chains.
